It occasionally happens that a spectacularly good script or plot is completely ruined by the use of bad actors. Bad actors are a particular threat to the big studio films who count mainly on the draw of specific actors to their films, marketing the actor more than the film. Today, there are numerous actors and actresses who make audiences cringe. Here are a few notable examples:
Keanu Reeves.
The consummate bad actor, he has made his reputation on his looks and box office draw, though he can do little else. His ridiculous attempt at a British accent in Dracula turned audiences away, as did his wooden performance. The Matrix films survived because of its fast-paced plot and groundbreaking special effects, marred only by Reeves’ wooden acting and the use of only one facial expression throughout the entire series.
Madonna.
Madonna has everything going for her, including the money to create any star vehicle she wishes, and a director for a husband. Why then has she not sought to make her acting worthy of being filmed? Her performance in Swept Away as a grimacing wealthy lady who spoke in a monotone made it tank at the box office. Also forgettable was Who’s That Girl, featuring a boring, giggling Madonna who seemed very conscious of the camera.
Ben Affleck.
The wooden, unconvincing performance he gave in Pearl Harbor was nothing compared to the horrendous gangster-type he tried to portray in Gigli. The film, and his performance, was so bad that the movie was said to be the end of his career.
Britney Spears.
Her one star vehicle film, Crossroads, performed poorly at the box office, making it unlikely that film will become her medium of choice unless she agrees to acting lessons. Her performance was charitably called “breezy” by some reviewers, which is another word for not even trying.
